Are You Letting Your Clients’ Personal Data Get Hacked?
On episode 2 of our show here at Today’s Real Talk, we go over the increasingly important topic of cybersecurity and what you can do to protect your personal and business information. Our special guest on this episode is John Stengel of JSCM Group, a company that offers security management and testing services designed to help people protect their sensitive information.
Today’s Cybersecurity Landscape
The level to which criminals are going to take personal information is evolving at an alarming rate, and the majority of the time, cybercriminals are driven by financial gain. The number one trend today is phishing, which involves getting info from people or businesses over the phone, email, text messages, and any other form of electronic communication.
In most cases, the hacker will send you a message that gets you to click on a link, open an attachment, or interact with them directly. After they get your data, they take it to the dark web and sell it to another source.
Using Apps with Care
In this episode, we also go over why it’s so dangerous to click “accept” on terms and service agreements. While it may initially seem like a harmless app that wants your location, it can actually turn into information about yourself being sold, therefore putting at risk.
The key to building your privacy is to commit to not downloading things that ask for your personal information and reducing your digital footprint as a whole. We also go over other strategies for keeping your data safe, like only using your debit card as credit at retail locations.
Real Estate’s Inherent Risks
The real estate industry is email-based in this day and age, and in some cases, personal, identifiable information is being sent between Home Buyers, Home Sellers, Real Estate Brokers, Mortgage Lenders, Real Estate Vendors, and other parties, making it extremely simple for a hacker to get a hold of it. We go over steps professionals in real estate should take, like making the use of a client portal mandatory, to protect client information and keep data safe.
Cyber Security and How It is Affecting Children
Have you thought about your children’s Personal Identifiable Information? Or how about what they are being exposed to via the internet and smartphone apps? John shares what he and his team at JSCM Group are doing to protect the next generation. They are helping to inform parents and the public about how to best protect their loved ones with an outreach known as Cyber Effect.
We’re intrigued by the topic of internet security and want you to listen to this episode to find out how you can keep yourself and your information safe from hackers. Catch us next time on Today’s Real Talk!
